I know the fire place clearences of the opening of the firebox, but this is a new for me.
This fireplace is one of the ‘old style” that had the “heatalators” built into the masonry box. On the front side, there is one on each side at the bottom and one above the opening. The same goes for the back side, which is in the kitchen.
The question is, What is typical requirement for the combustable wood mantle above the exhaust vent that is over the fire box? I don’t think that the 12″ rule applies over the heater grate, just over the fire box since there is only hot air coming out of the grate.
Anybody know???

hard to say, depends on local code, check with them
typically 8" sides and 12" above
not sure how heatilator venting effets that - maybe 12" above those upper vents
