What is used now to replace asbestos material? I’m installing fake log gas fireplaces with 8″ double wall chimney that has to run vertically through the T&G ceiling, through a plywood chase and then through the (flat) roof. Someone installed the chase off center and I can’t get the required 1″ clearance on one side between the chimney and the chase. Is there some material I can put to dissapate the heat and give me the equivalent of 1″ clearance?

Source control, ventilation, and filtration are the keys to healthy indoor air quality. Dehumidification is important too.

Where I work there is nothing that would replace the 1" clearence requirement. The inspectors are going to require me to have clearance even with boiler plate or masonary, it's a heat disapation issue I think.
Do you have the option of selecting a frieplace that only requires a 6" flue? I have seen a lot of gas fireplaces with 6" flues and even some small ones with 4".
