So does the expiration date on the red and blue firestopping have anything to do with the efficacy of the product in the tube declining after that period of time or more to do with the product meeting current fire codes and being grandfathered back to a specific production date?
I have some product that expired in May 2007 that I want to use but I also dont want to foolishly try to save $30 and apply ineffective product. This is in my own home not an outside job.
Any and all commentary appreciated.

I was gonna do that myself, but i figured by now I would have seen dozens of responses from the more knowledgeable amongst us.
Try pumping it out of your caulk gun.
Won't pump,...tose it.
Caulk tubes are not air tight. After a year or so, they absorb or leak in enough air to cause the product to start to set. If they don't pump like a fresh tube, I throw them out.

I cant directly answer your question but I can tell you I was pretty bummed when the three tubes my dad gave me from 05 were rock solid last week when we finished wiring mt duplex.
Had to go spend $45 to replace them.
I dont think the date will matter to the inspector as long as the stuff flows and is red. I've used yellow before and the inspector wanted to see the tube cause he wasnt familiar with that color FS.
