fixing and protecting newly refinished stairs
I just completed re-finishing the stair case of my house, stripping the old paint, sanding, staining and putting on two coats of poly. The problem is that the dog is already scratching it down to the wood and it really shows as I used a dark stain. So two questions:
- How can I better protect the finish? I plan to put a third coat of poly on but is there a more bomb-proof finish I could apply on top of the existing poly?
- IHow can I best disguise the little scratches? I don’t need a museum quality job and I obviously don’t want to re-re-finish! Can I just apply a wee bit of stain to that portion of the wood right over the poly or should I use another product?
Thanks a million!

Minor scratches-where you don't need to do a buildup of any depth (crayon or soft wax putty) stain works fine-put on, wipe off. It'll sink down in the scratch in the finish while residue is wiped off. Be warned however, your original stain will take -darker- than when you had the newly sanded smooth treads. This or lighten so you don't end up with dark scratches showing. Stain will work where you don't have a scratch deep enough for the wax/crayon to rub in.
You want the imperfections to disappear.

Put the dog on the back porch.

Crayon, either one made for wood repair or one from you're kid's Crayola box.
