I have some 2″ thick bluestone treads and want to flame finish a smooth sawcut. Does anybody know the proper technique? I tried a propane torch but it caused large sections to spawl that didn’t match the top surface.

Is bluestone a granite? I've only ever heard of flame finishing granite.
If you're willing to experiment further, probably the next step is an oxy-acetylene welding torch. Acetylene burns hotter than propane, but you can get a much smaller flame by using a small tip. That way you could quickly heat a small area until it's hot enough to pop, giving you better control of the texture.
Thanks Uncle Dunc. Bluestone is a sedimentary stone, not as hard than Granite. The Oxy-Acetylene torch sounds like it may take a while to do an area. I'll have to get my hands on one and give it a try.
I saw an episode on tv where one of Bob Villas guys did the flamed finish, and he used some type of oxygen lance. Said it was because of the higher tempersature.
