Hello all. A question about reroofing a house. Stucco houses present a problem with step flashing dormers. Does anyone have the policy of changing them with every reroof and is there anyway to safely change them without ripping off the stucco surrounding the flashing.

I forgor to mention that there is stucco behind the vinyl siding, with the step flashing behind the stucco.
Greetings panger,
This post, in response to your question, will bump the thread through the 'recent discussion' listing again.
Perhaps it will catch someones attention that can help you with advice.
Cheers
Are you going to expose the stucco again or go back over it with vinyl? I don't like to re-use flashings. If I'm re-roofing against stucco, I cut a reglet in the stucco parrallel with the roof and insert my counter flash in it, which saves having stucco repaired. I normally leave the old step flashing under the stucco and go over it with new to keep from damaging the stucco.
If you're going to re-install vinyl, the vinyl is your counter flashing.
You're almost as paranoid as the people that're trying to kill me.
greencu,
Thanks for the answer and thanks to razzman. I am going to re-use the vinyl but don't quite understand what u meant by cutting a reglet parallel to the roof. How does that save re-doing the stucco.

A counter flashing would slip into the reglet and cover the step flashing. That way, you don't have to break open the stucco to get the new steps behind it. If you re-use the vinyl, the vinyl will be the counter flashing and you don't need to repair the stucco.
Am I missing something?
I see dumb people.
run your flashing up the stucco that's behind the vinyl; tar or sefl-stick flash it to the stucco; put the vinyl back on...
but...just for grins, what's the vinyl nailed to?
1x3 vertical nailing strips 16" O.C.
what's the starter course (j-channel) nailed to?
its also nailed to the vertical 1x3.
Hopefully they ran a 1x3 an inch above the roof line to nail the j- channel to. even if they did not you just need to get your flashing behind the vinyl. You don't have to remove the vinyl but it would make your job of waterproofing a little easier.
Wherever you have a corner post the flashing detail is a little trickier and more involved so removing it would be advised.
If they just ran the 1x3 at 16" spaced vertically then you should use a heavy gauged flashing bent in full lengths to span from 1x3 to 1x3 creating a ridgid bridge to flash against. You would install this over your roof felt and against the 1x3's. Then simply continue to flash with step flashing and roofing as manufactor suggests. Provided you do a good job of replacing the sidng ( waterproofing correctly) the siding would basically act as your counter flashing. You do not need to get behind the stucco in your application. If they did run a 1x3 along the roof line to nail there j-channel to then you can just skip the full leangth flashing and proceed to step flashing.
I myself have learned many tricks to getting flashing behind vinyl and have no problem installing it with out the removal of siding. I can even get it done right with out removing the corners but its a little tricky. Either way the at least the j-channel should be removed. Good Luck
Thanks to everyone. So far the homeowner hasn't gotten back after receiving my quote.
