flinch plates to carry 12 foot load open
I’m looking for a source to give me specs to sister up a box carrying 2nd floor (top floor)joists to open up my kitchen to my dining room. the kitchen was an add-on and the ceiling is a foot higher and if i do it with a quarter inch steel plate I will not have to open up the ceiling in the dining room (this is why I don’t wabt to let in a lvl). Any Ideas?
Thanks,

Isn't it specked on your plans?
I googled for "Flitch plate" a while back and came up with a whole bunch of tables and designs. The spelling is critical with google, though. If you can figure out what your loads are, the tables should give you what you need.

I've seen several different flitch designs. You need an engineer to do it, but I fail to understand why an LVL beam won't work. I have one spanning 17' in a floor system...
