We’re doing a slate tile finish over reinforced concrete slabs. It is exterior work, but under roof, and in a cold climate. The client wants the look seen here reproduced.

Do you think 1/4″ slate tile over Schluter’s Ditra will work here? What about thicker slate, say 3/8″?
In the first photo, note the stone wainscot cladding against the house wall. We want to do the slate work right now, as soon as we can get material delivered. Would you chalk a line and lay the slate to the line, so the stonework can bear directly on the slab? Or would you finish right to the wall, and let the mason go over with his stone?

I would set the tile to the wall and avoid unneccessary scribing. The stone won't be all that heavy, and besides it's over stone. If you are worried, have them set the stone over 1/2" (or like) plywood and let it over hang an inch, giving you room to slide tile under. Best of both worlds.
Slate outside poses some issues with leveling chairs/tables, and with water it could freeze and spall making it worse.
