I’m planning to tile our bathrooms (replacing vinyl). The floor is 1″ plywood over 24″ o.c. joist (the home is 16 years old). I was reading the “Custom Buidlding Materials” brochure and it says that one should tile over floors where the joist spacing is *no* more than 16″ o.c. and the floor is at least 5/8″ thick. Some people I talked to suggested that, as long as the floor doesn’t flex, tiling on 24″ o.c. joists is OK. What is the right thing to do? Is it ok tile over a 1″ floor (with 1/4″ wonderboard) over 24″ joists or should I add some reinforements to the joists? If I need to add reinforcements, how/what do I do? Is there any information someplace on the web? Thanks

Kayshav:
I would have no problem tiling over your floors as long as the floors do not feel "soft". Try using a rigid backer such as Hardi-backer. This will lend some stifness to your floor. Use the best grade of flexible, latex modified thinset that you can get and also use a latex modified grout. If you still are concerned, you may want to stay away from the largest size floor tile and use a medium ( 8X8 ) or smaller tile.

1" plywood over joists at 24"o.c. is no problem for tile, provided that the plywood edges are tongue and goove or are blocked, AND that the joist span is not too long.
