Does anybody out there recomend using floor leveler and lathe over a plywood subfloor instead of backerboard? I have only used it on concrete slabs, and it seems like it would be a lot better than backerboard.

Here in the midwest, no. And if you're going over concrete, try Ditra. Fast! Light! No fasteners! Waterproof! 54 s.f. in one roll! Did I mention NO FASTENERS!!!
If you need to level the floor or embed heating wires then floor leveler works great. If the floor is already level go with the Ditra or backerboard.
