My 1920 American Foursquare has pine flooring over a crawlspace – no subfloor, as would be expected in such a modest house. The flooring is not in great shape and also has a significant area of patching. I am interested in laying new wood flooring over the existing flooring, in effect making it the subfloor for a new layer of flooring.
Have any of you ever attempted this? Can you tell me of the ideal method? Should I lay plywood between the two layers, or something like felt paper?
Please share any advice or experiences you may have had! Thanks!

Hello,
That answer would tend to depend on the exact condition of your existing, and the particular type of the new.
For instance, if your existing is sound and stable, and the choice of new flooring werre a floating engineered floor, snap clic connections, themn you might be fine just layi9ng the new over the old with the layer of padding the manufactureres provide, sometimes attached directly to the back of their systems.
But if the current haas weak spots and/or the new wioll be a full wood nail down flooring, then you need the plywood substrate to provide good surface, strength, and nailing. It should be laid in adhesive over the old and screwed through it into the floor joists.
