We bought a Flushmate home-grade toilet in January 1999. Since then, we’ve had to replace the flush cartridge twice — fortunately under warranty). The problem has been the same both times: the flush lever becomes harder to push, and you sometimes have to push twice to trigger flushing. The cartridges, when I’ve removed them, haven’t appeared worn or broken, but the act of replacement has revitalized the flush process each time. The Flushmate people have told me that (a) the problem arises because the cartridge “loses its lubricant,” (b) there’s no alternative to replacing the cartridge, and (c) the cartridges cost $20.
I’m not looking forward to a $20/year maintenance cost for this toilet when the warranty runs out. Is there, in fact, a less costly alternative?
