I am building tapered hollow box columns for a porch support , base 9.25 inch, top 8 inch. I would like to flute the sides, say 5 flutes moulded with a 1 inch diameter router bit. My question is: Do I follow the tapered edge to rout the flutes (which edge ?) or do I flute the straight stock and then taper. One other possibility is to reduce the width of the taper towards the top by lifting the router. I have no idea what will look best. Thanks
