Question about footings:
I’m doing some drawings for someone in Atlanta. He is adding a 16′ X 32′ two story addition. The lower level will be 8″ cmu all three sides up to probably around 10′. What would be the ideal footing size for the exterior wall if it is slab on grade and how much reinforcing would you put in it?
thanks!
Willie

Doesn't matter what's "ideal"- what does the codebook for the area say? It's based on the table in the code for the type of soil (most likely clay if it's in Atlanta).

thank you, I think we have an International Residential Code in the office and probably a Cabo code book as well, didn't think to check there
I don't know if code books will help thatmuch. The are just as likely to say that the footing must be designed to support X# of pound for a one, Y for a two or Z for a three story residence, then leave it to the engine3er to figur out how. It all depends on loads and soils . A weak wet soil will not have the beariong capacity of a stone compacted, so it would take a wider, stronger footing.
