I’m not quite ready to bring the HVAC guys in, but was wondering if during framing the floor if there was a typical footprint for new forced air furnaces (nat. gas)? Do you typically just frame a certain sized hole, or do you customize it for each furnace?
Downflow furnace, the heat will travel down through the crawlspace and the cold air return through the attic. So the furnace will sit on the first floor, but the plenum will need to punch down to the crawlspace.
If possible, I’d like the have it framed prior to HVAC guys coming along.

You have to know the cfm of the system to size the duct, which in turn determines the need for a certain size duct to carry the air.
All that to allow for the free flow of the processed air.
