Forum Definition?

CCD9 | Posted in General Discussion on November 6, 2002 06:16am

I guess I just don’t understand these forums.  I thought I was going to get good advice on a question I posted (which I did – BIG Plumbing Problem), but it seems more like a chat room-type atmosphere.  Everyone seems to knows everyone else who is posting, and if someone new comes on line, I feel they are criticized for not knowing what is expected – but what is?  Please tell me that this really is a “help” line – me and all the others out there who may be wondering and scared to post a question.  Piffin, I know I will hear from you – be wordy.  I can take it (I think!).

If you take the name of the forum literally you might better understand the goings on here. Sit yourself down on any jobsite across the country at "breaktime" and you will be treated to a similar plethora of responses and dialog spewed on these virtual pages. Many tough questions are handled directly and professionally, while others are almost ignored. Sometimes its the way the topic arises, other times its just the mood of the day. I`ve posted topics here that desperately needed attention and received minimal response and I`ve posted rantings that need only to be expressed but spawned sub-posts of there own. Its a crap shoot...but I`ve found more positives than negatives in the overall. In general, its a group of folk shootin` the breeze...you take what you can get.

Thanks Jaybird.  You got the message to me..........no more questions about the validity of the forum.  It's good to know there are people out there willing to answer any questions posted, too.

CC,  there's a price to pay for everything - the price to keep the diversity and expertize coming here to review/discuss/disect/solve peoples various problems is the atmosphere you seem to find threatening - -

there is no instruction manual for this site,  beyond a few guidelines http://www.taunton.com/pages/forums_hr.asp - - there are other places that are more agressively moderated (to bordedom,  IMO)

this is a good place to cure ignorance,  which is treated gently here,  if displayed in the form of a question - but not a good place to exhibit arrogance or stupidity,  particularly in an answer or lecture - not really much different than real life -

sorry about your floors - hope the resolution leaves you satisfied,  even if somewhat poorer - DOUD

the differnets with the forum is there is so many diffent type people and different type of construction. 200 ways to skin a cat. While somebody up north will pour concrete one way and I on the gulf coast will pour another way. Somepeople who build maple staircases and I have never saw a house with a staircase. Too many differents. so alot of question do not get answer not for lack of intrest but lack of knowelge on that intrest. And yes some call this place a chatroom. well you should of been here last year. It is real tame right now.

I'm starting to feel like the patron saint of BT here - if I ever die, I'm like to be called back into service here but I'll probably be giving outdated answers fifty years after I die.

    LOL

          CCD9,

This is like any construction site. There is only one thing two construction people can agree on...that is what the third person is doing wrong!

Enjoy the comment and wisdom from this group of merry people.

          Peace,

Take a look at Pete (The Chump)'s first post I think it was. Didnt take long for him to get accepted.

Most questions get answered pretty thoro as far as I can tell. If you don't get the response youre after try and put it under a different heading to make it sound a bit more interesting cause most of these blokes here like color. If you want more black and white (uncolorful) answers go to the JLC site. Its pretty stuffy in there IMO.

The heck with the thread...all I'm thinking about now is having bacon, lettuce, and tomato sandwiches tomorrow...

            Just like Pavlov's dog...

          3. Piffin | Nov 07, 2002 05:24am | #19

Make mine with lots of real mayo. I like to have the tomatoe juice and mayo dripping right down my chin. Even better if you time it so the bacon is still sizzling when you take the first bite.

            I'm wasting saliva now..

It's easy to get lost in a thread.  Have you checked out Diddidits pumpkin gun yet?  (Neighbor remover).

I can't take credit..that link came from Diddidit who works with some guy that crews on the cannon.

One thing;  women, in general, have no interest in the technology and engineering and effort that goes into designing and building a machine that will launch a pumpkin for nearly a mile!

          11. Sancho | Nov 10, 2002 09:17am | #29

I know what you mean. It took a lot of R&D and engineering know how to come up with that cannon.

The male mind. Wife asks them to take out the trash and they can't make time for it.

Want to lob a pumpkin across the international date line and men from far and wide will donate thousands of hours designing and building a device to do it.

            An amazing species we are.

The link you referred to was the message that prompted my question on forums!  And here is the link to my problem, for which I received some very good options but - wanting to "do it right" - we are now into our second day of having the pipes replaced thru the slab floor.

I am now hooked on this web site and have learnt a lot in a short time.    I hope this answrers your original question about the purpose of the site.

Your next assignment:  keep reading the various threads, and when you find one for which you have experience, either good or bad, successful or otherwise, be sure to contribute.  You very well may have an insight into something that no one else has thought of.  And if you're wrong, don't worry, no one here will correct you  :)
