I’m considering putting on an addition to my raised ranch. The addition would be a on side where the foundation is pretty much fully exposed. I had always assumed that on that exposed section there was still a 4′ freeze wall and footing below grade but I looked at the original plans and it suggests that isn’t the case. It seems like the footing is just below grade, I have yet to check this out. Anyway…. how do I deal with this? Can I put in the addition’s foundation and not attach it to the original? I had intended on only adding 3 walls and utilize one from the old foundation. Is this not feasible?

John, More info. Size of add., bsmt, what's this high footer. Go out and dig or probe around and detail it and repost. Not enough here to say anything of value.

John, simply check to see if you have stable non-organic soils where you want the addition. Place your footings on the subsoil and raise your basement walls to the height necessary. Tie in your footings & walls to the main building. And remember to ensure their is proper drainage and new fill up against the new concrete to 4' after it has cured. Your building inspector might want to see a berm on the wall depending on the length.
