Hello all– I wound up hiring an engineer to test the soil at my building site before proceeding with a foundation plan. (Southern living plan-“Gulf Coast Cottage”- built near marsh} I’m glad I did so. Borings found some soft stuff about 11-12 ft. down. The engineering firm recommended adding 4 ft. of “surcharge* on top of the footprint of the house, and allowing it to settle for the next month or so. This “surcharge” is a new term and concept for me. It certainly is appropriately named! For someone that knows as little as I do, I think I should give my full trust and support to the experts, so it is being done as we speak. Iwould like to hear from the other experts on this forum- any thing you might have to add- your experiences and opinions of this procedure, how often do you use soil engineers- especially in residential construction, etc., any advice or anecdotes. Thank you all for your previous and future comments.
