Foyer Tile Job – Need to meet 3/4 inch stair tread!
Hello all,
Once again I turn to the Breaktime forum for help. I am about to install Hardiebacker and am not sure if I should use 1/4 inch thick product or the 500 product (actual thickness 0.42 inches). It will go down on 5/8″ subfloor and 1/2″ plywood underlayment. With the subfloor and underlayment down, I have One inch of height to fill in to meet top of stair tread. My tile measures 5/16-3/8 inch in thickness. If I go with the 500 product Hardiebacker (.42 inch thick), its going to be fastened down on thinset laid down with a 1/4 inch notch trowell. I would assum it would compress to 1/8 inch or so. That would give me 0.54 inch with 0.46 inches to go. With the tile set in a bed of of thinset using the same 1/4″ notch towell., I figure a finished thickness of 0.375 inch plus 0.125 (compressed thinset) for a total of 0.50 inch, I’m at 0.04 inch higher than the stair tread. That should be good. Right? It would seem that the 500 product would be preferred as it would give a slightly higher tile surface than the stair tread. I guess the key here is the amount of compression to expect with the thinset.
Thanks much!

The bigger the tile.........
the deeper the trowel groove size. Large tile, a bit more thinset than small.
