hello all-
I’m considering taking on a project but I’ve never done this before.
I’ve done framing, plumbing, etc but I’ve never done installed windows
before. Any tips on installing and ordering Windows. I live in the NE, NYC where the changes with the seasons. I’m looking at the Marvin
UltimateClad line.
Anyways, RO is no problem. I just follow the RO to each windows.
It’s a brick house. What’s the general rule of thumb when installing and ordering them. Do they come in different depths?
1) How is the window mounted to walls with an exterior brick wall.
Are there screw holes on the sides and top of the window unit where you just screw to the unit into the rough sills. Call me crazy, but if I was plan to use 3/4 plywood as the too layer of the sills. I figueres it’s more *dimensionally* stable to use for a RO.
2) After the unit is put into place and screwed in…check for level….chauk the exterior is needed and then have someone
come and flash them out.
3) Ordering them. I want to take the windows out…frame. and get them in installed within two weeks of removing the windows. Any tips on measuring them or just take the current windows measurement of all the windows in the house and use those measurement and buy whatever
is closets.
As I’m typing this, it seems like there is much more to it than is….like getting the sills correct-flush with the wall..etc..etc. Is there any websites you know that has good info on window improvements
for the DIY or a good book. I still remember the jobs the installers did on my parents house a couple years back. They were Owen Corning Fiberglass units. Beautiful units but shoddy installation. Installers used latex on the exterior…etc..etc.
Any HELP would be much apprecitated

This has been much discussed. There are a number of opinions as to the best methods, and lengthy details on detailing, etc. Check the archives with "search." For an overview try http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/thisoldhouse/knowhow/tandt/index.html#wind -- one entry is actually the installation of a Marvin.
