I am in the process of pricing the framing portion of a Very large house with three eyebrow dormers. The challenge is the eyebrow dormers tie into a 10/12 vaulted roof. The dormers are quite large the smallest being 12 feet across and the largest being 20 feet across and 6 feet tall at its crest. The dormer rafters are 2×8’s set level and are to tie into the 10/12 vaulted roof rafters which are 2×12’s. There is a beam at the top of the eyebrow dormer to carry the common rafters from the main roof ridge. My question is how do I tie the level eyebrow rafters into the vaulted roof. Both the dormer and the main roof are vaulted inside so where the dormer joins the roof must flow with the ogee curve of the dormer ceiling.

.. Al.. been reading your post and i still can't visualize the problem... i'm just dense i guess.
are u trying to price it or build it?
cause they're two differnet problems , right?
got any .jpg files u can send of a cross section thru the center line of one dormer? and an elevation of the front?

I'm just pricing the labour at this time. However I have never built an eyebrow dormer before, and these ones are the biggest eyebrow dormers I have ever seen. I would like to figure out how I am going to build them so I don't lose my shirt If I do get the job. This place is huge, 9000 square feet, 180 degree circular porch similar to the one in FHB issue 121, elevator, lots of curved walls, 12' high ceilings on main floor and 9' plus on second floor, post and beam living room with curved beam elements (24'high ceilings), reinforced concrete arches with stone veneer supporting second floors. The entire roof is vaulted with eleven dormers three of which are the eyebrow dormers. My company is just pricing the framing labour. So far we've estimated seven men for five months. We're probably getting in way over our head, but hey we're up for a big challenge and you only live once. Unfortunately I don't have any files to send you, computers aren't my specialty. It's hard to explain the situation.
*JoeWould you happen to know the year or issue #.Thanks.

March 91 cover has an eyebrow dormer with an article about framing them. Nothing as big as what you're talking about, but definitely would be a help. Joe H
*Al, if you go to the fine homebuilding index and type in "EYEBROW" there are some back issues listed...jim
*Al,Might not have the picture but, you may be able to have a truss manufacturer do all the work on this one. This would depend on where you have load points avaiable.Post a sketch on a napkin ...... will ya.So you want to do a monster do ya. b Careful, I hear a BIG sucking sound near you. Whatever you figure, double it, takes 8-12 months for us and be sure to watch your contracts. One slip up may take you down. Don't forget about all the havoc on your financials and plan for it. Do you have a good panelized plant near you? Makes all your suppliers and subs nervous to. Do you get to show it?

*The eyebrow article is also in the Taunton/FHB book "Windows and Skylights," part of their series of reprints in book form -- any bookstore will have it.PAD the labor estimate! Those details are a killer amount of work.
