Looking for reasonable idea of framing cost for a very moderate (1800 square foot) cape in upstate NY. Floor, wall and roof framed. Wall sheathing and roof decking. Thanks for any input.

anyway there was just a thread about this that frenchy started if you want to use the search.
Could you say whether you are wanting materials included?
Id warn you that therre will be a wide range of answers. I often find that one man's simple is another mans castle

Andrew,
Depends what area of upstate N.Y..
Prices for framing range $7-$11 per sq ft,labour only,
how many dormers?, what pitch is the roof?
Some guys charge extra for dormers,
I am near cooperstown in upstate N.Y.
crude numbers seem to be between 10 and 15 bucks a square foot for labor plus materials. Complex things, curves bump outs etc. change numbers a lot.
A simple ranch may be done for a lot less a french provincial timberframe will be way higher
Do framers charge more for unwanted curves and bump outs that they seem to add to the construction.
curves bump outs and terrain all effect costs. As does travel time and traffic and many other factors. How hungary are they, When is the note due, and who are they working for? If you seem like a nice easy going guy they may prefer working with you then that jerk across town. However if you are only building one house and they have a chance for several or a chance to work with a developer who builds steadily, guess who they will select?
Their bid will take all of those things into account...
Seems odd to me that framers charge by the square foot. (Drywallers too)
Why don't they make more of an effort to determine their actual labor costs on a building-by building basis?Glass, china, and reputations are easily cracked and never well mended. [Benjamin Franklin]
They do,
The guy just wanted a rough number and that is a guide to start with. Rough numbers are a tremendous help to someone just starting out and needs to figure out what he can afford.
Only a fool would use numbers like that to bid with or buy from. Far too many variables to ever be accurite. As far as drywallers go, well I'm sorry but I have yet to meet one smart enough to do anything other than drive a calculator.
