I’m trying to have a contractor replace two headers and insert a load bearing beam in our garage for attic storage. I already had engineers spec out the new headers and beam. The contractors I’ve called so far feel this project is too small for them. I’d like to tackle this myself if it’s not too big of an undertaking. I currently have a double 2×8” header above the entry into the house and a 2×12” above the garage door. The engineers recommended a double 2×8” lvl header above the house entry and a 3-1/8×15” above the garage door. Can I remove the current headers and frame in the new ones or is more support needed for these new headers? Is there a source I can reference on how to properly secure these headers in the wall? Or am I out of my league here and should hire a pro? Thanks in advance for reading and bare with me I’ve only helped frame simple walls and projects.
