i am planning to build a trellis out of treated y.p. (12′ out from house and 15′ across). i will attach one side to the house and the other will be supported by 2 – 6×6’s approx. 15′ apart. i will attach 2 – 2×8’s on either side of the posts, running parallel to the house. on top of the 2×8’s i am going to run 2×6’s (16″ o.c.) running perpendicular to the house and 2×8’s. on top of the 2×6’s i am going to run 2×4’s perp. to the 2×6’s and parallel with the house. Will the 2 – 2×8’s (15′ apart) support this weight? thanks

normaly 8' o/c is span for posts so your almost doubling that..and you don't give the span on the 2x4's so...if there's a doubt in your mind you could put solid blocking between the 2x8 beam 2'o/c or go with 2x10 beam. I would say off the top of my head though, that what you plan on doing would work.
*Hey Jim,I'd be careful giving your OK, unless you want to be held responsible. You never know who you're talking to in this place.Just my opinion.Ed.
*Now who would have the heart to hold a little old lady like me responsible, besides I asked the expert at Lowe's and that's what he said. . . so there, put that in your pipe and smoke it.
*Hey Jim,I don't smoke a pipe, just way too many cigarettes a day. I used to smoke a pipe way back when, but it was made of glass and had water in the bottom of it. But that was a long time ago. And my memory ain't what it used to be thanks to that pipe. There's a thread going on the main board about dangerous questions that seem to come from DIY's concerning structural issues that they are contemplating that they have no business attempting. I think it's under "Here's what I don't like". Or something like that.I agree with Jeff that there are some things you shouldn't advise OR incourage on this board. I'm gonna be more careful in the future with my advice.Your Buddy,Ed.
*Yeah, I got a couple of eastern Indian "Hookas" up in my attic somewhere...I know you have a point, I'm just funnin. Actually, I pretty much limit myself to advising what I know. If you catch me advising on plumbing, it's time for the red flag. I have a plumber who even hooks up sinks for me. If it contains water, I don't touch it.
*I have a new house and am having a problem with abnormal flex in the floors. The spans are 16 ft. and built with 2x10s 16 inch o/c. Any possible solutions to correct this? I am lucky that I access below via basement.
*No they will not , you should use another footer with 6x6 in the middle. Also you should place them 10' out with a 2' overhang and use 2x10 16"on center. This would pass here in PA and NJ. What you suggest will not pass and will have to much bounce.
*Vance you should post this on the board. As for your problem , Wow! 16' with a 2x10 , where was the inspector that day! If it can be done you need to support them with footings, beam and posts at least at the 12' mark, in the middle at 8'would be even better. Or you could double them up and add cross bracing and hope for the best.
*SYP (1.6M, 1200fb) can span 16'-6" using 16" spacing and 40# live load.
