There was a book a few years back at the “woodworking” stores called “The Steel Square”
I think it was a reprint. It covers a lot of territory on the framing square.

Was reading the post on framing squares and several of you mentrioned the manuals that came with them. I must be buying the wrong ones because I never get a manual with mine and neither have my co workers. Who has them on the web to download ?
*I bet Stanley could help you out.
*Josh,Those cheap blank squares you guys buy, you know, the ones with just the inches and fractions markings, don't come with manuals.
*Rick, I wish it was that simple. Some of the kids get new cheepies, but mine is not.I have been to home depot, and two local lumber yards and even checked with tool crib and none of the squares (other then speeds) come with a manual. I know how to use one for the basics of stiars, simple roofs etc, but It would be fun to see and learn new tricks. Maybe they figure we do not need them in Oregon. It rains so much that manulas would just rot or mildew.
*all the ones that have the tables and cuts inscribed used to come with a little paper manual..the problem was that the manuals would get disappeared by persons unknown... i don't know if they still come that way , but i can't imagine any company taking the time to inscribe all of that knowledge and not giving you the key to rosetta stone...
*Josh, if you know the basics you can probably figure out how those tables are created. Try fiddling with the squrare and compare your measurements with the numbers on the square.blue
*Josh,My framing square, speed square are (don't all yell at me at once) Craftsman. They both came with the book, and I thought I saw the book available by itself for purchase. But this was 3? years ago.Sean
*don't know where you're from in orygun, but powell's in portland has whole books on the framing square, many of them used......
*Mike, either you are wrong, or I got ripped off, I bought an expensive square with all of the tables, etc. and it did not include any book or manual. I kinda wish I had gotten one, because I had to learn everything I know about its use the hard way... "by guess and by golly" I think I'll mosey on over to Stanleys website......
