Hello everyone,
I just had a new slab poured in my 90 year old house yesterday and I’m going to frame a new set of basement stairs next week. The old ones were a little too steep.
I want to squeeze in another step to bring the rise from 7 7/8’s down to 7 1/4.
For headroom reasons the extra step will have to be a winder. The inital idea was to have 9 runs, flat landing, 90 degree turn, then one last step off the landing (total 11 runs). So to get that extra step I was thinking I’d bisect the landing. Usually the landings are divided into thirds in the case of winders, but I don’t near the 3rd step. I’ve never framed a set of stairs this way.
Any tips or reasons to avoid this?
Thanks,
Ian Janes

Is there a specific reason you can't have 2 steps down from the landing instead of just one?
I think that is what I may end up doing. The specific reason was because there wasn't enough headroom when you step off the landing down to the last step(s). I poured the slab a little extra thick in the landing area as I wasn't sure if I may need to stick a post or two in to free up some headroom. So if I use a post I'll be able to cut out a section of the double joists that define the stair opening. May end up as a floor to ceiling box newel.I kind of decided that a 7 7/8's rise with no winders is safer than a 7 1/4 rise with winders. Turns out I think I'll be able to have the best of both worlds. Thanks for your input.I.J
I was going to chime in that I thought the higher rise with no winder was superior because of safety reasons. It's interesting that you got to that conclusion first lol!

Hey,Yeah I took a tumble in a customer's house a while back on a set of winders. I have a 11 month old daughter and hopefully more kids to come.
I don't want them and their friends to do the same on their way down to their playroom!.Great minds think alike!
