A firend of mine just had their furnace replaced. The old flue pipe was 5″ PVC that exited through the rim joist of the house.
I haven’t seen it yet but he says the new pipe is only 3″ so there’s a substantial gap around the new pipe.
The house is 15 years old and has aluminum siding.
A couple of questions:
1) Assuming that we can’t find aluminum siding, what other options/suggestions are there for neatly terminating the new flue?
2) Do we need to worry about proximity to combustables or are the flue gases cooled anough by the time they reach that point to not have to worry about it?
Thanks

r u a feckless dastard?
A 3" concentric vent kit (which has exhaust out through the middle and combustion air (CA) intake in the "back") would probably fill the 5" hole nicely, and even if the CA is not taken in from outside.
The exhaust products from a condensing furnace (one that can be vented in PVC) are not a combustion hazard. Some building or mechanical codes will disallow discharges of exhaust or flue products "that cause an nuisance" or directly onto walkways or sidewalks.
