We’re redoing a asphalt/fiberglass roof with a 6 ft. wide brick chimney on one side. One set of roofers says that galvanized sheet metal cricket flashing would last longer and be be more immune to leaks. The other set claims that built-up 2 layer modified bitumin cricket flashing would be best and that the metal flashing would be liable to crack at the solder joints due to differential movement between the house and chimney. Does anyone have an opinion?

Sounds like each one is going with what he knows how to do best, rather than what might actually be best for the situation. I get to rip out lots of those modified and epdm flashings and do them over with sheet metal. I question the use of galvanized since it's going to be a maintenance item keeping paint on it. I'd prefer copper, but with either metal, I could form it where there'd be minimal soldering on it.
