I’m going to install a new garage door opener and I’m wondering what the pros and cons are of the chain drive vs. the screw drive models.

I just replaced my old craftsman chain drive with the wrap around chain. The chain always had to be slack to work right or it would make lots of noise from the motor gears. Trouble was the slackish chain would flap around and make a different noise. The replacement is chain but the chain is between a track (or grove) runs much quieter. I also hung the motor on a muffler mount strap (pep boys) and this reduced transmited motor noise. I surpect screw drive to be even less noisy. Make sure your door moves real easy by hand when you take off the old opener.
Chain drive is noisy, but usually more reliable than most other styles.
I sprung some good money for a belt drive.
It is incredible. So quiet, you can't even hear it run. ONly thing you hear is the sound of the door wheels in the track. No problems at all.
I have only had my belt drive for about 4 months, but it is really sweet!
In theory the belt drive should be about as good as a chain, only quieter. However, they had been briefly on the market about 20 years ago, then disappeared, so I suspect there was some problem with them then. Presumably whatever that was has cleared up.
