Unplug it.
Thanks for the suggestion...
Well, you asked for recomendations. Seriously though, unless you're disposing of a body i'd say anything above 3/4 hp would be over kill.
Besides, CSI types always find the bone fragments in the drain anyways.
That's because folks remember the bleach but forget the hydrofluoric acid.

What? Teenager moving out?
The disposal doesn't need to be gigantic -- often the main difference between a "small" unit and a "large" one is a plastic "shound baffle" around the motor -- it's not really any bigger. I forget what the HP ratings run, but you don't need the biggest unless you'll be disposing of bodies for the Mob.
Just be sure to get a brand name (ISE is generally good) and a stainless grinding chamber.
If you have a DW (dishwasher, not Dear Wife), don't forget to knock out the plug in the DW connection before installing.

Thanks for the information.
My current Disposal is an ISE, 3/4 HP. It served us well for 16+ years. I was thinking of a 3/4 HP Kenmore. I'll check for the SS grinder feature.

Note that ISE makes a bunch of the other brands. You can tell by comparing small features.

buy another ise, you probably won't even have to chage the mounting pc in the sink, all of them i have found just hook right back up. larryhand me the chainsaw, i need to trim the casing just a hair.
Actually, I would not recommend plumbing the DW through the knockout. Give it its own path direct to the P trap.
Food debries, coffee grounds, etc can clog up the drain in the disposer and back up a lovely soup into the sink when you run your diswasher. I think there was a recent article in FHB about plumbing this.Rebuilding my home in Cypress, CA

Not if you always run the disposer after putting stuff in it, and maybe give it an extra shot before turning on the DW.

Of course it clears if you run the disposal EVERY time you use the sink, but it seems a little better to just plumb it so you don't have to. Otherwise, you might as well run a switch to the water supply so that every time water runs the garbage disposal starts to spin.Rebuilding my home in Cypress, CA

Thank you all for the replies and the banter
Try to find one with the outlet at the same drop from the top as the current unit. Unless of course you enjoy replumbing the sinks.
Thanks for the tip!
I'd rather not fool with the PVC if I didn't have to.
