Can anyone recommend some brands to look at/stay away from? Part of our basement finishing project is to convert our massive brick wood fireplace into a gas one in hopes of it being the main source of heat.
We looked at some Heat-N-Glos today from the local showroom. Seemed reasonable, though the installation was a bit higher than we thought it’d be (about 1100 bucks) but not outrageous, either.
Also, anyone know of any gas inserts that don’t use the fake logs? I like gas fireplaces, and don’t mind admitting that they are gas. We’re not fooling anyone with the fake logs, and would prefer something less…’fake plastic wood-grainy’…if that makes sense. Doesn’t seem like any manufacturers (that I’ve seen) address this issue.

I wonder if that is a very good idea. The existing flue for the fireplace will almost certainly be too big for a gas heating appliance. Trying to adjust the flue damper properly will be very difficult and fraught with peril (if closed down too mucj) and even establishing a proper draft and avoiding condensation within the chimney might impossible.
Now, if you use a unit with a metal flue and use the chimney as a chase foir that flue....

I'm matching tool donors to a church mission to Haiti - we're shipping a bus converted to a medical facility in (now it looks like) April and can fill it with clothes, tools and all sorts of stuff needed in that poorest of all countries. A few hand tools or power tools can provide a livelihood for an otherwise destitute family. Please email me if you have tools to donate.
Thanks to Jeff and David and Jim and Rich and Steven and Mark and Jason and Shep and Jen and Mike and Joe for their offers!
The first donation just arrived! Thanks and God bless!

bob:
The gas inserts come with their own flexible flue. They ren two flexible tubes about 5" in dia...ones the exhaust flue, the other the combustion air intake.
You are not trying to fool anyone but to come close to logs is a nice look . I dont understand why you would want something different because people will watch it . They come with glass doors for veiwing, so why not be looking ?
A search on the net will yeild plenty to look at . I just got done looking at wood stoves and the gas are right beside them in the same sites.
The prettiest stove Ive seen is from Countryflames.com , but you didnt ask for pretty.

Ahh, that would take cre of those concerns.
Another question for consideration: if the appliance is inside the firebox, how often will it run and, if not often, will a certain amount of heat be "lost" to the mass of the firebox.
Obviously, that heat wouldn't be really lost, but would have "deferred delivery" which might or might not affect your percerption of heat delivered.
I don't know the answers, just thinking with my mouth open, so to speak {G}
