I was sitting near my gas line huffing a little methane and having a cigarette and thought about a BBQ extension. Looked up what it would take but ran into a code type question: Are specific couplers required for a gas line? The article I read said that code specific couplers are required. Are there multiple types?

There are different types. Webers, I've been told, usually can be directly connected, other brands may need a coupler.
FWIW, depending on who you talk to, you may or may not need a separate regulator for the grill.
You have a couple of different questions here.
the common gas grill is setup for use with Propane and propane accesories.
If you want to use it on natural gas (assuming that you don't have a program gas system) then the grill needs to be converted. that means changing the jet size and maybe the regular.
Natural gas comes in several different flavors. some run moderately low pressures (2 PSI IIRC) and have regulators at the appliance. Others run low pressuere (8-10" water) and it is feed directly into the appliance.
Now if you have a grill on a cart then you can use a hose with a quick disconnect to go from the grill to the gas pipe.
If it is a permanate type of installation then you run "approved" gas piping. Black, galvanized pipe and in some area copper with flarged fittings.

A-holes. Hey every group has to have one. And I have been elected to be the one. I should make that my tagline.
The question is about the black pipe. More than one type of coupler or special couplers for gas?http://www.etherhuffer.typepad.com
Well back pipe is IPS (tapered thread and you can continue that up to whatever you want.but if it not fixed then you need a hose with a quick disconnect fitting. such as this one.http://www.amazon.com/Natural-Gas-Hose-Quick-Disconnect/dp/B0000SWALO.

I have a Weber natural gas grill. It's just black pipe to the grill, but at the grill, there are some special connectors rated for gas at either end of the connection hose. Sort of like air tool connectors, but more precision.
