I could have included this with my other post on putty vs caulk but when I put two items in a post, somehow both seldom get answered – short attention span syndrome, possibly…
The sink strainer has the following: the strainer, a paper gasket, a rubber (or synthetic) gasket, and the nut. The garbage disposal only has a paper gasket between the sink bottom and the locking mechanism for the mechanical pig.
What is the proper way of attaching the sink strainer basket? After I slather on some caulk or goop the basket with caulk, on the underside of the sink do I use both the paper gasket and the rubber one. Not sure I understand the purpose of both. I would probably help if I had some instructions with the the strainer basket…

Putty or caulk on the basket. On the under side, the rubber gasket against the sink, then the paper one, then the nut. The paper ring keeps the nut from twisting the rubber gasket out of shape when you tighten it.
Thank you
What he said, cept I use the putty.
