I want to install a Geothermal heat & A/C system in our home. I Live in westchester county N.Y. and could use a reference on any installers as well as advice on Geothermal’s reliability.

Gary,
I am putting a geothermal heat pump in the house I am building now. My vendor his HydroTemp Corporation in Pocahontas, Arkansas. They have been making these sytems for a number of years and, although they do not advertise, have dealers throughout the USA. I located them from a post on this forum about a year ago. They have an informative web site and they are responsive to e-mails and phone calls. [http://www.hydro-temp.com]

Gary,
Geothermal is good stuff, has been in use in our home for 10 years now, no problems yet. The electric bill for our 3,000 ft home in Maryland is $130. a month. Definitely a premium for installation, but we figured payback at 7 years. The equipment consists of Water Furnace compressor/exchanger ? and Grundfos pumps, with York air handlers. Don't miss the option of sending preheated water to your domestic hot water heater. Good luck. Will you be using wells ? I'm keeping my fingers crossed because we have 3,600 ft of 1 1/2" polybutylene run up and down both sides of our drive. This past Spring at the start of a/c season we did have to replace 2 of the loop pumps but otherwise things have worked out great. Bob
*I am considering geothermal heating for my home in Pennsylvania. I have read that an open loop with two wells is an economical system. What kind of specs do the wells need? Is there a minimum number of gallons/min? For buried closed loop systems, what are the limitations of the tubing i.e. how long can I expect it to last? Thanks in advance for any advice.

Randy,
Your open loop GPM requirement is a function of water temperature and the load your system is designed to take. Your vendor can give you the data. My vendor guarantees the loops for 50 years but states the material itself should last "forever".
