From my thread on ‘How old are you,’ I’ve learned that quite a few of you are as old if not older than my parents. Since you’ve been at this kind of work since before I was born, I’m sure you that you’re a couple decades past the point where your folks give you tools for Christmas.
But I’m not! I got a Makita brad nailer, to replace the one I’ve had on ‘long-term loan’ from Dad for two years. I also received a ‘heavy-duty’ DeWalt jigsaw and circular saw. I can’t recall the model numbers right now; I think they’re the 321 and 368.
I was quite proud of my collection of tools until I tried doing some professional work on my own. I didn’t notice, until I was in a client’s house, how much of my tool roster really consisted of cheap junk with only a couple gems like my Makita Li-ion cordless drill.
Anyways: did you guys get anything?

I'm not sure if you directed this at the old folks, of which I'm almost one.
But today I got a PLS 180. Merry Christmas from me.
Last week I got some misc. small hand tools (Schedule C)
Before the end of the tax year-might want to make another purchase.
This from a guy that still uses the circ. saw I started with-35 yrs ago.
Best of luck in your endeavor!
and a prosperous New Year.

You'll love the 180 Calvin. I used it the other day with the detector Mike from PLS sent me to shoot level for a 50' deck.
Im constantly finding more ways to use these lasers, all the while making my job easier.

I'm sure I'll get the satisfaction out it that I've had for the 2.
Mike and I had a bit of a talk tonight when I returned from 3-man golf league. We talked of it's benefits and I placed my order. Can't wait for the arrival. I've not had "much" of a call for the detector, but I know I could have used it many times for some long distance interiors with plenty of light. And the fan spray is much better than the 2.

When I bought my 180 I knew I would use it, I didn't have any idea how much.
Now after a month of owning it I'd say it gets used at least every other day.

Good for you man, quick payoff is sweet.
I go look at a job, it usually makes it inside on the initial looksee. Nice to lay the groundwork for a concise bid.

I don't have a multimaster yet. I've heard they are expensive. Just trying to get well informed before I dive into another tool.
Are they as good as you guys say?
What tasks do they excel in?
The laser on bids gives me the ability to see how far things are out of whack. If I need to order base shoe to hide gaps that a toe kick won't cover alone.

MM excels in cutting. Cutting accurately. Cutting where you can't cut with anything else (oh sure, I've read about and even tried some of the other cutting methods). a single floor pc., trim, undercut, cove, crown etc, in place and straight. Finish that circular saw cut to the wall.
Grout joints, plaster...............
Sands nicely and right up to the trapped edge.
Scrape out old glazing, cut that old caulk surrounding that metal window to the brick.

Yessir, remodelers tool for sure. Don't believe there'd be much of a call for it framing. BUT, if there was that one thing-you'd already have it.

My wife is a man eater dude. I don't think the multi master could make her squeal. I really believe that the Energizer bunny is a copy of her. LOL
It don't take much for me to buy a new tool, seeing an easier, better way of making my work look better is all that is needed for a new tool.

I meant that most people on this forum have not only accumulated a full compliment of tools, but have worn them out and replaced them. ;-)Christmas gifts work a lot better when the recipient can say, like me: "My first 'real' circular saw! My first 'real' jigsaw!"

I just looked at your profile- you are a young'un. 1/2 my age.
I didn't get any tools for Christmas. Partly because my wife would have no idea on what to buy me; partly because I buy tools all year long.
Sometimes I need them when I buy 'em; sometimes I buy 'em just for fun.

Didn't get any tools. Not for christmas at least.
I traded off alot of my unused tools to get ones that I would use. Felt like Christmas for almost a week with the "new to me" tools coming in.

I gave my 70 year old mother a Dwalt combo set and was she ever excited.
i gave my BIL a dewalt drill last xmas and she was drooling over it the entire time she was here so I knew she would like it.

PS I didn't get anything for xmas this year but I bought the 6 piece dewalt combo and gave my mom the drill and saw ,batteries ,charger and flashlight and kept the rest to add to my collection and I have got a metal cutting saw on the way as a bonus.

No, but it might be worse. They're a set of screwdrivers from Sears. The 54-piece Craftsman SD and Bit set. Am I still welcome here?

I have at least 4 sets of chisels
Only one set is used for any kind of rough work; the rest you could shave with.
And I'm very reluctant about loaning them out.
I don't freak too much out if one is misused, since I can sharpen them pretty quickly.
But I do correct someone about which chisel he can beat up.

Sure did.
My $50 Ganahl's gift card from the boss became a Stinger cap stapler for roofing and house wrap.
My $50 HD gift card from our family gift exchange will become something, but what? Ah, decisions, decisions. Like the Ryobi table saw. Rated a best value in FHB.

Yes, remember that you are what you pretend to be - and it's hard to style when you have the Black and Decker collection. My first circ saw was one of those DIY things from Sears, so BTDT. Professional tools work better. I learned that cheap tools are really quite expensive.
I will be nice to Ryobi because I own several (up on the boat). The HOA had a handyman in to do something. Did not see him, but I was looking over the B&D collection with some Ryobi he had laid out. OK...
I have been using the Makita 18v LiOn kit for a year now, usually on a daily basis, and I am a Happy Camper. If you can swing it, get the big kit. Cuts the cost per tool considerable. The circ saw is getting a workout cutting roof sheeting on this Reroof all the Mansards job. No job power unless you bring it.

my trade coming out of high school up till iwas mid 40 was automotive,so lots of tools.
i have to laugh at your attitude on judging a mans work by the brand of tools.in automotive ,if you don't have snap on ,other automotive guys think you can't change a tire. well i've owned my own shop since i was 20,i have a few snap on,all bought used not one new one ever. the only difference between my sk and craftsman wrenches is i didn't owe the snap on guy 15k.
if i hired a guy to trim my house and he walked in with a fine tooth chainsaw,i would probably have to get out of there and come back in a couple hours,if his joints were tight i'd ask him if i needed to go get some gas for him.
the guy running the tool is what counts.larryif a man speaks in the forest, and there's not a woman to hear him,is he still wrong?
Got myself a Dewalt 18v Rt angle drill and flashlight.
My wife earned big time bonus points and bought me a tool I never would have thought of because I thought they were all too expensive to justify and I would have though the kind sold at HD would be Mickey mouse....Its the Rigid "micro see snake" This thing is awesome, I have three people at work who already have projects for it....not sure if I'm going to loan it out though. It's basically a miniature sewer camera / bore scope, for looking in walls, down in drains, home starter ear-nose-and throat doctor kit. It has a 3' fiber optic cable on it with an LED lit camera on the end. I was totally surprised at how good the picture on the color screen is. I had 3 GC's come to my home to quote a remodel this week and all of them were impressed with the the thing...especially a lowly H.O.-DIYer like me having this tool. If I read the manual right you can get up to a 30' extension for the camera...anyway maybe I'm easily impressed
BTW if have the multi master...Yes they really work as good a people say...yes, I could not imagine life before it and..yes all the accessories for it from Fein are ridiculously EXPENSIVE...nothing like paying $6.00 for 1/2 QR-FT of sand paper...it's really well worth it though (side note: not sure if it's true or not but I heard there was a guy selling sand paper triangles aftermarket for it and Fein went after him and shut him down, I guess they really want to keep selling that $6.00 sandpaper)
