WE HAD SOME MARBLE TOPS INSTALLED ON ONE OF OUR JOBS AS WE’VE DONE FOR MANY YEARS. THIS PARTICULAR TIME THE STONE WAS A STATUARY VEIN, OR WHITE, AND IN A HONED FINISH. IT HAD BEEN SEALED IN THE TYPICAL MANNER BUT WE HAVE NOW REGRETTED NOT HAVING TALKING THE HOME OWNER AND DESIGNER OUT OF USING A HONED FINISH.
OUR PAINTERS PREFORMED THEIR JOB WELL IN FINISHING THE CABINETS AFTER COVERING THE MARBLE WITH ROSIN PAPER, ONLY IN THE PRIME/PREP STAGE THEY HAD
LAID THE PUTTY DOWN ON THE ROSIN PAPER. NOW WE HAVE OIL STAINS FROM PAINTERS PUTTY IN A NUMBER OF PLACES ON THE TOPS. TO TOP THAT OFF, AFTER HAVING CLEANED OUT A PAINT BRUSH ONE OF THE GUYS LAID THE BRUSH DOWN ON THE ROSIN PAPER-COVERED TOP AND THERE APPEARS TO NOW BE A STAIN FROM IT.
I’M SURE THIS IS NOT OUT OF THE ORDINARY, AS PROCEDURE GOES, AS I STATED WE’VE HAD MANY STONE TOPS INSTALLED OVER A NUMBER OF YEARS. THE ROSIN PAPER IS THE TYPICAL TYPE USED FOR YEARS IN THE INDUSTRY. IT JUST SEEMS THAT THE HONED FINISH IS MORE OF THE TREND TODAY AND MAY NOT BE A PRACTICAL ONE. BUT THEN HERE WE ARE, AND WE NEED HELP.
THE BRAND OF PUTTY THE PAINTERS USED WAS CRAWFORD AND IT COMES IN AN ORANGE CAN. WE ARE NOT SURE OF THE PAINT BRUSH STAIN – NO ONE WANTS TO OWN UP TO IT AS OF YET SO DETAILS OF WHAT EXACT SUBSTANCES ARE INVOLVED WE ARE NOT SURE.
CAN ANYONE HELP? PLEASE RESPOND VIA E-MAIL TO [email protected]
THANK YOU

Pat - All caps is considered 'shouting' on the net unless used for an abbreviation (just 'FYI').
Standard marble stain removal on a honed finish involves making a poultice. I can't remember the formula but you might find it on the net or someone else here can help.

*Jeff's right -- basically you put on to the marble something that is more absorbent than the marble itself so it 'sucks' the oil back out.Try dry Plaster of Paris. With a white marble and a honed finish I don't think you'll have much luck getting the oil back out. If the stain hasn't discolored the marble, ie., if it just looks 'wet', you might be able to seal the marble with a silicone sealer and lose the stain in the 'wet' look the sealer will give.
