My gf is buying an older home which needs updating. Some of the wiring is two wire. Will a typical gfci work on two wire applications? Two wire meaning hot, neutral and no ground.

Yes that is the preferred solution
Yes, a GFCI does not need a ground to operate properly and provide protection.
The only caveat is that the GFCI will not provide the equivalent of a ground that may be needed by electronic equipment for proper operation or lightning protection.
