Hi y’all.
Waaay past my bed time, but can’t sleep so here’s my question. For those of you who regularly install pre-formed, glass block window units, what is your perferred method of choice for permanently keeping the unit in place after temporary shimming?
Do you favor packing brick mortar around the window, or using thinset mortar, or using urethane caulk? or are there other methods you perfer over these few that I have mentioned? I would like to know.
I’ve used regular mortar, but it seems too tedious. Regular mortar is too stiff to use with a mortar bag…at least for me. I’ve used NP-1 Urethane caulk, which works great, but gets expensive.
Window /door foam also works great initially, but will turn black due to sunlight degradation…sooo I’ve found this option to be not so good. Iv’e also used wood stop material on very large window units and then caulked and wrapped outside stops with coil stock…very sharp looking…very strong…but too labor intensive for my taste.
Sooo, for a 32 X 24 siliconed unit (I don’t buy the mortar type they fall apart too easily if mishandled during installation) with a vent…having a 1/2 inch gap spacing all around, how/what would you fill this gap with?
Thanks. Looking for many varied answers here from many various responders. I want to know what really works, and what is easy.
Thanks again.
Davo
P.S. yea, I need to install 4 glass block window units next week, which is my motive for this post….soooo please help out !

I have used white polyurethane caulk to install prebuilt glass block units. It is strong, flexible, and paintable. But I don't install them regularly, so others may have different ideas.

Billy,
Thanks for the suggestion.
Anybody else want to divulge their techniques?
Thanks,

Where do you get preformed units?

shim in place to "set" foam backer rod to seal "vulcum" brand name caulk to secure.... i should own stock in this stuff but it's all i use to set alum & glass commerical storefronts flows great (use a good gun) i almost never try to smooth it out just leave it as it leaves the gun... it keeps it's flex but you have to cut it with a razor to remove...
