My glass (ceran ?) cook top just came up cracked.
Quite considerably too.
A large crack is across two of the burners and one in between.
What would cause this? I dropped nothing on it. Never super heated it. Nothing out of the norm.

Dunno. I've seen them abused pretty bad without cracking. I'd guess either a defect in the top of something sharp pressing against the edge of it, under the surrounding trim.
Take a shot at getting it repaired under warranty, even if your warranty is officially expired.
the edge could have a miniscule nick in it..
that got it started..

Most are simply tempered glass vs. ceramic.
Tempered glass after long exposure to high heat will develop uneven areas of tempering (glass tempering is actually a compressive preload, not at all like temper in steel or other metals) and when that annealing process is carried far enough, the glass cracks, and if enough temper was lost, it does not shatter like new tempered glass, but gets multiple macro cracks as you describe. .
High heat such as deep fat frying or candy making on the cooktop will accelerate the process, as will letting a teapot run dry (dont ask how I know about the teapot), esp if the internal temp sensor in the cooktop has degraded.
When installed, did it seat equally all the way around? unequal pressure loading it as it went through cycles of heating and cooling is a common cause.

I may have fried some grouper the other day (but it wasn't high heat), but I can recall in the last couple weeks I heated something real hot with a ss pan by accident.
Maybe its a little of all the above mentioned???-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

do you have kids?
CAG's right, blame them.

Nah, if you're married just go ahead and take the blame. It'll settle on you eventually, so you might as well be resigned to it.

Is it an induction cooktop?? Some magnetic stainless can go past the curie temp and cause cycling problems and thermal shock as the pan temp itself goes in and out of magnetization.
(if it is an induction unit and you replace the whole thing, I'll give you a good price for what is left) <G>
