what do the resident experts at “BREAKTIME” recomend as the best way to remove excess wood glue from from a clamped up joint. I wipe the squeeze out right away with a damp rag but I still get a poor penetration when I stain the wood. any ideas?

Don't wipe. Wait till it mostly sets up, still a bit 'plastic' and then scrape off with a handheld card scraper. That way you don't smear it in the pores of the wood.
What Jon said. First, don't use too much. Then let the beads ooze out. After they have turned rubbery (an hour or so) you can scrape them off with a chisel. Or you can wait until they are hard (the next day) and scrape them off.
Stain the wood and apply one coat of "varnish" before gluing. After cutting and fitting the joint, apply a little more stain to the exposed wood, then carefully glue it together. Don't wipoe off the glue, let it partially set like the other guys have mentioned. pop the beads off and apply the second coat of varnish.
"Varnish" is whatever your clearcoat finish is.

Or, you can carefully sand. Glue doesnt tend to penetrate deep on an already smooth surface. Or, plain white vinegar will soften PVA glue. Not dissolve, but soften. Rub it with a Qtip for a minute and then your scraping efforts will be much more productive. Don't saturate it though, you'll risk having the joint itself slip.

inside drawer boxes I put tape on the joints near the glue line. That would work here.
Or give em a coat of finish before assembly
