god is testing me

ponytl | Posted in General Discussion on April 22, 2009 07:07am

I feel as if I’m tested most days… but I have fun try’n to pass each that is tossed my way…

but i know with my sparky God is play’n games… I’ve posted about him before… but let me see if i can paint a picture…

I know him because his late brother ran with us as kids…  micky “mick-rat” was a year older than me… in hindsight a good kid from a very bad home… lots of drugs and drink… I don’t know that i saw his dad more than 2x in 10 years… he joined the navy and thats where he died a few years later… no one was ever told how…

My sparky was his older brother  who i only knew from ragged out harleys that @ 12 even i knew they were POS held together with wire… he pictured himself as some “biker type” but at 5ft4″ and maybe on a good day 125lb… he just wasn’t they type to strike fear in you  even with a loud bike and lots of patches on his jacket… maybe he was a biker bitch who knows…

Their uncle was an electrical contractor and i guess my guy went to work there… before you had to have a lic. to be a sparky… when they passed the law that said you needed to have a lic. they pretty much just gave everyone who said they were an electrician one and any that came after had to “train and take a test”  as i gathered property and had tenants that needed buildout… I’d run into my late friends brother and toss him a bone… He has always done good work… i need to make that clear… he makes up “code” as he goes  but it’s code way above and beyond what is code…  he’s a one man band that works in shorts and sandles (he swears because he has smoked so long he has to wear shorts because he breathes through his skin) thus the need for shorts…

my deal with him on my condo project was that he’d oversee the job and that he’d build the service… at an agreed upon hourly rate… and it was not a cheap rate… but i knew the service would be built right… and i’d hire and pay a couple journeyman to drill holes and pull wire and make up boxes and install fixtures… that was our deal… well right off he didn’t have any work so i paid him 3x what the journeyman were make’n so he’d have some work… which amounts to at least 6x because this dude is SLOWWWWW… he smokes alot (420 fond) and makes 20-30 trips to his truck each day…(a truck i bought for him btw)  add to the truck… i paid 20k to keep the bank from take’n his house…  now with all the smoke… you’d think dude would be mellow…  hell no he whines like an old woman who got bad food at the deli… he walks off the job every few days because of who knows what… in his life there are no good days…

fast forward… after every payday we’d argue… he’d think he worked more days than he did… and we aren’t talk’n an extra hour… we are talk’n full days he didn’t show up and would swear he did… I’d show him the security tape of that day and you could see every car truck and person come &go… his truck never there that day… and he’d still swear he was there…

so now i got to where i’d pay him to drop by… meet the inspectors when required and if he really needed some hours I’d find something… in the meantime he’s doing landscape work for $10hr… when i’m telling him I’d pay him $25hr to put switches in the boxs and hang light fixtures… but I’m not pay’n master electrician rate for that 9remember he’s slowwwww… so as far as production even me toss’n him this bone is stupid on my part… but he won’t “work for that”  like he’s offended… when all i’m doing is try’n to help him and cost me 3x as much… in the meantime he loses his house (that i gave him 20k to keep from lose’n) and comes to me pizzed that he had to put a motor in the truck I got him 2 years before…

so all along i tell him that i don’t want anyone else but him doing the panels (boost’n his ego) he does do nice panels  every wire and connection is all  but perfect  but it also lets him kinda check the work done by others and it makes him feel good…  we agree upon a set price for this work because he can’t count hours and i hate to argue… well somewhere  in his drug infested mind he figures that the agreed price was too low… he set it and i didn’t argue and i thought it was high  (5hours per panel @his rate)   I know i can do one in less than 2 and make it look nice…  but in this price he also had to get everything inspected which i know can take time…

so he doesn’t tell me squat… he just doesn’t show up… when i told him he could (a week before i needed him but he said he was broke and couldn’t pay his $250mo rent… yep you got that… a master electrician that can’t pay his $250mo rent… finally i call… figured he got a service call or something… and he tells me how i’ve screwed him… hangs up on me 4x… (if it wouldn’t cost me 5k in new permit fees he’d have been gone)  but i try to just ease through this… i hate get’n lawyers even if he is bonded and i know i could collect on it…

ok… i know i went on & on…. i’m just venting… this dude is a nut case… the code office knows it… the inspectors know it…  come to find out… this is the norm for this guy & jobs… starts em and gets goofy (or goofy surfaces)

i’ve halfway come to a new agreement with him…and maybe we’ll get finished with him  but i’m not bet’n on it…

P:)  like always I’m not spell check’n  i’ll read it after i post it and edit it maybe 🙂

I think you should only pay him at the end of the job, (or when you can afford to have him gone for a bit). I get the impression, that when he gets any cans in hand, he goes out and imbibes in whatever vices he has going.

Worked with a painter that was that way. The only way to get work done, was buy all the materials and pay him for the labor after he got finished.

if gods giving you a test, and it's mutiple choice questions,i always go with c.

a' is to obvious,b might be ok,but who knows,d means you don't know the answer and your to lazy to move your hand and check b.

as i read this post i'm lmao,  i read most of your posts and to tell you the truth if i didn't have nothing going on,i'd apply for a job with ya.hecki'd work cheap, you always got stuff  going on, it would be good times just hanging around and digging post holes or something,or seeing you come in with 40 vanity tops roped to your car with a trailer load of toleits or the electrician argue he was there in spirit.

what are you going to do for fun when your done with the condos?

don't worry about your test score, they tell me no one really grades them.

YOU ONLY NEED TWO TOOLS IN LIFE - WD-40 AND DUCT TAPE. IF IT DOESN'T
MOVE AND SHOULD, USE THE WD-40. IF IT SHOULDN'T MOVE AND DOES, USE THE
    DUCT TAPE.

Your generosity and good will are remarkable. Your post caught my eye because, sadly, my 18 year old son is struggling with drug addiction. You mention that your friend smokes a lot of grass... and even if that is all he is using, it can be a problem. I may be jumping to conclusions but I bet there's more going on. The behaviors you described are predictable and common in people with serious substance abuse problems. I'm learning that the common denominator within the world of substance abuse is self destructive behavior in response to stress. Unless a person really gains the tools to manage their stress, it will inevitably overwhelm them and, tragically, send them back to their substance of choice. Learning to manage stress is at the very core of any decent drub/alcohol rehab program. It's at the core of AA. If you have an emotional investment in this person, I highly recommend that you seek out an Al-Anon or Nar-Anon meeting. These are meetings that help sober relatives, friends, loved ones cope with situations such as yours... You will find that you share the same grief and disappointment as many other people, that you are not alone in this. And you will learn strategies that will not only help keep your mind and spirit strong, you will learn how to more effectively help your friend. Ironically, generosity may not be as positive a force as you might think. Addiction is a devastating disease and anyone involved -- the drug abuser and the people who care -- all need to understand there is a steep learning curve to just begin to cope. Maybe you'll just fire the guy and be done. But if there's more to the relationship than that then you'll need input and education in how to navigate.

I had to stop reading that post because I have a tough time believing ANYBODY would put up with that type of person. Life's TOOOOO short, let him fall through the cracks.

I think you are what's called an enabler. You are not helping the situation, just allowing it to continue.

he swears because he has smoked so long he has to wear shorts because he breathes through his skin

Ding, ding, ding !!  This is your brain on drugs.

Tell him you want him to prove that he breathes thru his skin by letting you tape a plastic bag over his head.

Frankly, I agree with Hammer about being an enabler...........no matter how well intentioned your efforts and sacrifices to help this dude.  He's wasting his life and unfortunately you're helping him accomplish that.  He's also intentionally using you...cause you let him.

He needs a cold-turkey rehab way more than a sparky job at the moment.  Tough love is frequently tough to mete out also....but necessary nonetheless.  Tell him he's welcome back just as soon as he sobers up and becomes reliable.

man ... thanks guys.... the funny thing is I like the guy... and everyone but him knows he is his the root cause of any problem in his life...

what i didn't include in my post was and I swear he told me this between hang'n up...

"and besides smoke'n dope which i do only for medical reasons... I'm 20 years sober this year"

he adds color to my life... what can i say... everyone who comes in contact with him walks away shake'n their head and roll'n their eyes....  while i just smile and give em that look of... "and you thought i was make'n this krap up"

my plumber has offered to kill him more than once and he doesn't even have a dog in the fight... except for the few times he's drilled into his lines..

I have talked to the head inspector... and I'd have to repermit the whole job... close to 5k before it's done... then i'd have to sue the idiot... and life is just too short...

while i can see from the answers... most of you guys would have long ago killed the dude or at least would have broke all contact...  I really don't let him upset me... thats why i call him back after each time he hangs up.... I guess i'm almost amazed at how his mind works... that i have to state most things i say with... "now don't get mad and hang up  BUT...." and then try to get him to explain the last dumb azzz thing he told me...

like...  "well i should have made 15% on all the materials you supplied... and not 15% of what you paid for them...(even if i got them free) but 15% of what they would have cost me...

i have no doubt that he lies awake at nite think'n about this Krap...  btw he lives on peanut butter... thats it... and pepsi...  peanut butter for all meals...

now that I'm add'n stuff... for you guys to know that i have to be more crazy than him... this dude replaces each tool in his truck as he uses em...  yep... if he needs a drill he walks to his truck... get said drill... walks back to where he needs to drill... drills hole... wraps up cord... returns drill to truck... KNOWING he has  more holes to drill in 10 minutes... but it ain't 10 minutes it's 45 minutes because of the trips to his truck...

oh oh oh... i got on to him about his truck drip'n oil on my concrete...  my bad... after that he parked 20 yards down from the door...  i just added a good hour commute'n to the truck time on to each day...

anyway...  i think i have it kinda figured out.... I'll have most of his work done for him each day that he arrives... he'll just have to make a few connections... think i can keep him to about 4 hrs  a day... he never liked get'n in more than 5-6 anyway...

at this point it'd be real hard to get anyone else to come in and take liabilty for what has been done... and i do trust what has been done has been done well...

I'm not mental health expert...  but i think somewhere with the abusive absent father add in the very small stature... toss in the drugs (past and present) you get a huge chip on your shoulder.... I think he's lost every fight he ever had... he always says no one likes him... always tells me "i know you think I'm an idiot" (ok he reads minds)... if he drops a screw you can hear him 200yards away... to the point people come running thinking something very bad has happened... you'd think he chopped off a finger...

anyway... you guys make me laugh... and thats worth share'n these stories  no matter how bad they make me look <g>

and yeah pot is refered to as "420" now... i have no idea why or when it started... just i read it enough on the net to know...

        P:)

guess i'll turn up the jimmy buffet and keep smile'n

if you can't beat em,join em,with all that drama i'd be doing the 420 about every hour.

the story is good for a laugh though.YOU ONLY NEED TWO TOOLS IN LIFE - WD-40 AND DUCT TAPE. IF IT DOESN'TMOVE AND SHOULD, USE THE WD-40. IF IT SHOULDN'T MOVE AND DOES, USE THEDUCT TAPE.

Your like me. You like to have one of these guys around for entertainment. We had one a year or two ago that was a classic. Everyone hated him because of the #### he would pull. I loved it. Always made whoever was with him look like a shining star.

Not that you do, but don't feel bad.  I've got a guy very similar to that in my life and everyone always wonders why I keep him around me.  I lend him money (knowing I'll never see it again) and he ends up mad at me cuz whatever he spent it on doesn't work out.  I'll take a Saturday to help him out with a project that he's losing money on (free of charge) and a month later I'll hear about how "we" were too slow on that job "we" did and that's why he doesn't have any money.  I'll lend tools to him and he'll get mad at me when I ask for them back... months later.  Or even better... he'll be totally convinced that he bought the tool and look at me like I'm trying to swindle him out of it.  He'll grab one of my nailers, put the wrong nails in it, and then give me #### about my lousy tools not working right.  I've had him on jobs where he'll get the ear of the GC or the homeowner and he'll start going on and on about his "junkie wife" and how her grandfather "diddled" his kids, or about how his 14 year old is in jail for stealing cars.  My hair stand straight up when I hear him open his mouth in front of customer.

What can I say?  He's a character.  Makes me laugh.  And perhaps helps me realize that things could always be worse.  This guys got a story that you couldn't make up.  Tougher life than I think I could have lived through.  Mother was an alcoholic.  His father left when he little.  Didn't finish high school.  Can't read.  Been working like a dog (he sure ain't lazy) since he was about 13.  Had a rip roaring drinking problem himself until about 10 years ago (he's sober now).  Married a woman that I have absolutely nothing nice to say about who has literally stolen the kid's Christmas presents to sell for drugs.  Has a son with fetal alcohol poisoning who was born addicted to coke.  Another kid (14) locked up for stealing cars.  And a daughter (maybe 12) who is just a sitting duck for the first guy who pays any attention to her.  He tried to kill himself about 15 years ago by getting drunk and opening a tank of propane up in the kitchen.  Lit a butt and blew himself out of the house... and the house off the foundation.  He's got "new" ears, nose, and hands.  While still in bandages from the explosion he set himself on fire burning brush in the backyard and had to have all the reconstructive surgeory done again.  About 8 years ago I watched him fall 32' from an attic ceiling down to the footers in the basement.  Ruptured spleen, collapsed lung, concussion, etc.  Two summers ago he flipped his kid's go-kart and re-collapsed the lung.  I've seen him nail his foot to the subfloor on more than one occasion.  He even fell in an open manhole while shopping for a Halloween costume.  And for some odd reason he's been trying unsuccessfully to refinance his house since the day I met him about 9 years ago.  He talks about it constantly... literally at least once a day... and yet it never happens.   This guy has literally "been there, done that, and bought the t-shirt".

I think that's why I like him so much.   He's a survivor if there ever was one.  A true battle-ax.  So I'd imagine there's probably more to "your" guy's story than we're hearing.  There's almost always a reason.

Your guy's line about being sober other than the medicinal marijuana cracked me up pretty good though.View Image

            I know that guy.... LOL

I guess i know how blessed of a life I have lived... and continue to live... I guess i have always embraced the pain of living with open arms knowing head first into the storm will give you a hell of a ride and a great story....

I'm just dumb enough to think there is hope and happiness out there for everyone...

if i get nothing else out of anything... i know it's a southern thing... but damn... if we get nothing more than a story... i guess it's ok :)

your dude sounds like he's good to have around just as a lightning rod to keep you safe

I had an "intriguing" character working for me off and on several years ago. Like your electrician he had a challenging childhood and drug problems. He was  honest and straight with me and usually pleasant to be around. He often had an unusual perspective on things (or atleast one that was substantially different from mine).  I used to pay him cash at the end of the work "day". Sometimes I would pay him during the day so he would be able to get smokes or whatever before returning to work (which he would usually do).

When he left for new challenges I heard through the grapevine that he was very appreciative of what I had done for him. In any event I feel good about how I treated him.  Perhaps your electrician harbours similar sentiments toward you when he is not caught up in the urgencies of the moment.

I imagine that God appreciates all the chuckles you give Him.  I know I do.

Old ties are hard to break, I guess.  But there are plenty of signs that this guy is stealing more than money from you.  He's being disrespectful and causing you to carry part of his burderns too, emotional and financial.

You've earned your happiness.  But it takes discrimination and some determination to keep sour grapes people out of your life.

I've spent a lot of time and positive energy, many years, trying to help friends out of their own ruts.  After realizing the folly in doing that repeatedly, I'm now a lot more direct about that stuff, with everyone.  It's been surprising, how liberating that approach has been.

  9. migraine | Apr 22, 2009 09:12pm | #10

he's a liablity issue and you know that.  say what does 42o mean? 4 joint laters and $20k in damages?   Ever try to get insurance after one bogus or legitimate claim?

Have a talk with the building dept and see if they will cut you some slack.  I could  see them doing that, specially if they know this guy's MO

Caring is exactly that, caring.  Enabling is something totally different.  Your professional reputation isn on the line.  Is this worth it?

It hurts to see the one's you care about waste away.

It's amazing how the kids are more informed than I/we are, nowadays.

Heck, when I was a teenager, I used to sell pot over the phone at my mom/dad's house.  You know the rotary dial phone on the wall in the kitchen.

The terms were "ash" for hash and "oak" buds.  Price was bsed on board feet. It helps when you work for a comapny that sold domestic and exotic hardwoods.

        I'm not making this up.

    Hi ponytl,

ok... i know i went on & on.... i'm just venting... this dude is a nut case... the code office knows it... the inspectors know it...  come to find out... this is the norm for this guy & jobs... starts em and gets goofy (or goofy surfaces)

i've halfway come to a new agreement with him...and maybe we'll get finished with him  but i'm not bet'n on it...

I have a brother with similar tendency's, manic depressive, I told him I was going to be straight up with him, that I meant no offense and hoped he would take my offer as it was intended - nothing more and nothing less that my love for him.

I gave him a basic run down of how the business world operated. Like it or not, that's where I lived and if he was going to survive in my world, he'd have to live with my conditions. If he didn't like it, there are other jobs available. If he chose to leave and then wanted to come back later, I would only take him back "if" I had something available, no more holding a job open.

I gave him a list of exactly what was expected of him. Fail to fulfill the list 3 times in a year was grounds for immediate dismissal.

"He" chose to find a job elsewhere and fortunately for me and my family....he found a job and place to live a couple of hours away. He's actually doing reasonably well and I'm happy for him. Our communication is sporadic and that's ok with both of us.

where abouts are you going to retire here in Va., there are a few Virginians here at breaktime that should try to get together sometime and throw rocks at each other or something.

        Hi dedubya,

where abouts are you going to retire here in Va., there are a few Virginians here at breaktime that should try to get together sometime and throw rocks at each other or something.

Hey, I like throwing rocks and bike ridin' down yer trail and even ridin' in the New River if I've had 'nough shine....

I'm trying to settle what when where right now.....working on a couple of rental places in Galax, some land right outside Independence, some more in Tazwell and going to look at some in Dickenson in a few more weeks. Dickenson is much further than I really want but dag gone I can get a lot of cheap land there.......passed up one deal.....286 acres for $89k and it really did have a few flat acres.

I prefer Carroll for no other reason than I spent my teen summers there at my grand parents cabin...right about the time 77 came through and blasted the sides of the moutains away.....makes it easy to get around but I'm still in mourning. We normally bed down at a lodge near Mabrey Mill.....gotten like home folk there...they always put us in the same room and have us a movie picked out and fresh coffee in a thermos when we pull in.....shucks....they left the key taped to the lodge door last time we were up because they were going to be gone for the day.

Buffalo Mountain is always a quick welcomed hike.....we enjoyed snow flurries and 45 mph winds up there a couple of months back.

If $ were absolutely no object.....garshk.....probably buy up all of Pulaski, Wythe, Carroll and anything else I could afford...maybe some Floyd too......as it is we may settle with what we have.....who knows......got about 4 more years 'til retirement and am researching hard to figure out exactly how I'm gonna build the next/last house....want to be a hermit completely off the grid. Self supportive and spend my free time workin' with needy seniors to provide them a better existance without them giving up a single grain of that awesome cherished pride......easier said than done but I've got past experience doing so......

So how far are you from Hillsville.......there's a fantastic little pizza place there - Tony's....got authentic Sicilian Pizza.....takes about 50 minutes to make so we always call ahead.

Pedro the Mule - Mule Packin' fer da mountains......God's country

Boy yer gonna be  in my backyard--I live in Radford. But al lmy family is in Carroll and Floyd, Greyson Co. Esp. Hillsville is allmost my home town but did a lot of courtin down around Galax--might be some relatives down that way-- :) Fact is I am waiting for my wife to get home so I can go to work in Fancy gap. I just bid a job two weeks ago just around the corner from Mabreys Mill  just off the parkway. The New is about 1/8 mile away from me on two sides so I use to  canoe quite a bit before I got lazy, I pulled the ole girl out from under the trees the other day and washed her up though, getting her ready to hit the river in a few weeks. Heck it snowed in Blacksburg yesterday when me and my little girl went to the Home Depot. Keep in touch.   DW

Actually that one had 3 NG Wells on it.....I passed on it because it didn't have any streams and I figured if I dug a water well, I'd end up with another NG Well.

Like you, I did consider the free heat "and" it could run a generator free......

I have a loser brother, guaranteed to not show.

I guarantee he'll steal your stuff and pawn it for drugs.

He'll be there for payday though if he can drive.

Last weekend we had about $ 11,000.00 worth of aluminum tubing stolen off of our plant property.  So, it makes it in the local papers and on the news which is good because maybe somebody saw somebody, etc.

            <!----><!----> <!---->

So Tuesday we had a guy show up that worked for us one day last year at our plant.  Actually, ½ way through his second day, he disappeared, never to be seen by anyone at our company again.

            <!----> <!---->

It seems this article reminded this guy that he hadn’t been paid, etc.  Our office manager tried to kindly tell him, “Listen, we have no information for you (address, SSN#, etc.), you never filled out any of the IRS forms I had told him to fill out, etc.”

Some of our guys finally had to show him the door.  It was really strange.

It's not that the truth doesn't phase them...  it's that.... their view of the world is so skewed they think they are the only ones that see clearly...

maybe thats why we keep them around just to be amazed at.... a thought process thats so far off skew...out of plumb... that you have almost have no arguement... because they at their core everything they believe is based on a loose sand foundation... unstable and ever shifting...
