For those who dislike the “big boxes”, here is some more ammunition. An article in the LA Times describes the dangers resulting from the stacking of pallets high on racks in such stores as Home Depot. Seems like more than a few people have been killed or injured by merchandise being knocked down on them from the high racks used in such stores. Not too long ago, there was a similar article outlining the lack of earthquake preparedness in warehouse style stores with unsecured merchandise on pallets on top of racks of questionable strength. When I was in the San Francisco area, my paranoia led me to avoid certain isles with pallets of roofing compound somewhat precariously stacked on pallets on racks at least 16′ high. It sounds like I should adopt a similar paranoia even up here in Oregon…
