I’m building SWMBO a potting shelf in her greenhouse outa Western Red Cedar. I wanna give it a finish that’ll give it a bit more protection.
How does boiled linseed oil sound?
Maybe put some boric acid in it?
Anybody (Sphere) know how to acidify BLO?

The cedar will be insect-resistant enough, so long as you keep the endgrain out of water and/or dirt.
And yes, boiled linseed oil will do a good job, and will look great. But no, it won't be all that durable. Generally, a linseed oil finish on a table top will need to be re-oiled at least yearly.
You might want to try one of the high-end deck finishes -- Pennofin comes to mind. It is also oil based, but not linseed. It will last somewhat longer.
I won't be laughing at the lies when I'm gone,
And I can't question how or when or why when I'm gone;
I can't live proud enough to die when I'm gone,
So I guess I'll have to do it while I'm here. (Phil Ochs)
Thanks re Pinofin. Knew about the yearly refinish on the BLO.
Once sat at a bar in Wales that had 300 years of nightly linseed oil application.

Our pot shelves (oak) have 3 coats of Helmsman spar urethane (satin). Holding up well.

Heat up bee's wax in / over a double boiler, and add enough turpintine to make a thin, waxy paste.
Brush it on warm. Scrape off excess when cool and buff the schnizzle outta it with a burlap type cloth.
Yer good to go for less than half the cost of any other finish that will be subjected to green house conditions.

C'mon Sam, yer not baking a cake. It should skin over when cool, and remain semi liquid but able to be scraped with a plastic credit card.

What? Ok, 17 drams of bee vomit to 147 Milliliters of 12% turpintine heated to 179 degrees farenhiet for 5 mins.
Brush on with a disposable chip brush and scape excess prior to a hemp rag buffing to a sheen that you can see your nose hairs in.

The contents, (none,) of the previous post means I have read your post, thanks, I've got it, I've nothing to add to our discussion and dont want to waste any more electrons than I absolutely have to, but if I did have something relevant, informing, or just humorous, I would, but, as you well know, I am a man of few words and really prefer to let others do the talking whenever I can get away with it, but since I forgot what a garrolous person you are and that you tend to prefer those with like attributes, I will take this opportunity to beg your forgiveness, said mental defect on my part being wholly my own fault due to much partying all night with loose women and copious quantities of fine, if slightly illegal, pharmaceuticals, and yes, I am using the term in a rather loose fashion, as I am quite sure you recognise.SamTA Pragmatic Classical Liberal, aka Libertarian.

Would you add a little Carnauba for hardness, or is the bee's wax tough enough on its own?
Anything could be added. Parafin or the like, but simple is my route, I even just shave the bee vomit in paint thinner and let it steep...rub on lathe work while its spinning and buff off excess with the wood shavings.
