We probably have several threads about tips and ideas here somewhere, but I thought I’d start with a real timesaver for absentminded, aging folks like me.
I have lots of things stored in boxes, shelves, plastic containers, and drawers. I like to think I can find most anything because I make a special effort to put things back where they belong and to keep them categorized. For instance, I have a big plastic bin for each router so I can find all the Bosch attachments in one place, for instance.
My idea is to take digital pics of the contents of each storage location and put them in a file on my computer. Currently, when I can’t find something, everything stops until I locate the offending item. With pics, I will be able to just go through all my locations without moving anything. I may even make a slide show of these pics to refresh my memory.

My computer is the biggest mess I've got.
Wouldn't want to have to find something in there.
on my desk, sometimes I can't find the computer...
Your idea is a good one, for insurance reasons, too. I take pics of each tool box loaded and then an exploded view...with all the stuff spread out.
Might be a good idea to tape a pic to the inside of the lid of each box too, so you can quickly see if something is missing.
While you are at it, tape a menacing looking photo of yourself in there, with a message to any potential thief about how you will "break every bone in their body when you find them...and you will find them!" 8>{
