gotta be a way

I would really like to follow specific topics or threads of my choosing. I would like only those topics listed in “my new messages”. But when I go to “my new messages”, everything that I haven’t read is shown. Now, why would I want to list the messages I have intentionally skipped in the first place? I don’t get it. Can anyone clue me in?
