I’m planning on finishing my stair treads in a dark limestone and was going to do the risers with veneer-core mahaogany plywood to match the rest of the trim. My question is, would it look right to have the grain run vertically for the risers? Since it’s from plywood, my material yield is not an issue. I just thought that since the risers are short, vertical members, that it might look neat if the grain ran that way too.
Any thoughts?
Thanks!

Hmmmmmmm...
Do a mock up first and see.
I vote horizontal ..
I vote vertical. No wait...I vote horizontal. Mabe vertical.... Bob's next test date: 12/10/07

.
A-holes. Hey every group has to have one. And I have been elected to be the one. I should make that my tagline.
Nope..no diagonal option for me. Too contemporary. Maybe a solid painted color of some kind. Bob's next test date: 12/10/07
I suppose that, since its plywood, it doesn't make a whole lot of difference which way the grain runs. Plywood is stronger with the grain, but for risers it should be OK.
That said, I've never seen the grain run vertically for risers.

Visually, the vertical grain of the risers would tend to move the viewers eye up the stairs perhaps lessening the impact of the limestone treads. However, the vertical grain of the risers would blend with the grain of the skirt boards better than horizontal grain perhaps moving the viewer's eye too quickly up the stairs.
OTOH, this sweeping view may be stopped by the contrasting limestone treads.
I think I'll go with "make a mockup" as someone else suggested.
It is a potentially interesting possibility, economically facilitated by the use of plywood rather than solid wood for the risers.
Post some pics of the mock-up if you really want to get a bunch of opinions!

I vote for horizontal - vertical will be discordant to the eye - mot folks won't notice, but ....
