Happy,
I've seen guys belt sand the edges to remove the saw marks and then varnish. Don't know if that's correct but that's what I've seen.

*Avoid use of petroleum distillates products!Get some wet/dry 1200 grit. Or polish with jeweler's rouge. Meself, I'd hit it with the sandpaper first and finish it off with the polishing.
*If its smooth but dull "paint" with epoxy and it will look polished.
*The local big box sells marble/granite polish. If that don't work I've used auto polish on marble. However, marble is softer that granite. How strong are your forearms?
*What you will have to do is sand it with finer and finer grits of sandpaper. You will need to use silicon carbide sandpaper on this one, granite is fairly hard. It works best if you do it wet. After 1200 grit, polishing with leather impregnated with a cerium oxide polish really brings up the shine. Of course you can fake the polish with a thin coat of epoxy or Opticon. However this is frowned upon in the lapidary world.
*when i worked in a granite shop we did this all the time you want a disc grinder with a 4" sanding wheel the important thing is the rpms you want to polish at 2000rpm we used 80 to put the bevel on and then worked up to 800 and finished with just a dab of sealer also if you polish it dry remeber to wear a mask that dust is really bad stuffnoe
*Even if you polish and sand wet, wear a mask. The water comes off in a very fine mist and evaporates rapidly, leaving the EXTREMELY fine granite particles to float in the air. Silicosis will kill you.Don
