Any ideas what it is? Any ideas of how to kill it? and what finish to prevent its return?

Nigel, I give my Trex deck a thorough power washing every spring and it looks just like new. I usually have all kinds of stains, mold etc. from the winter months and every bit of it comes off. Just get a good high pressure washer with a 15 degree tip.
*b TVMDCPower washing is one approach but it won't kill mold or fungus. Mix a cup of TSP and a cup of bleach to a gallon of hot water and scrub the deck with that solution. Let it stand for about ten minutes and then hose it off. Repeat as needed. Wear gloves and goggles.Remember, mold is not specific to trex. I've seen it on wood, rocks and even roofing materials. It needs moisture to thrive so try and keep your deck dry.Have plants? Put them in plastic (not clay) saucers and elevate them on blocks to keep the deck dry. You can get them at any nursery.

I agree with G. If you are not refinishing, forget the chemistry. Power washing doesn't kill certain organisms but it will make that material look good again. Probably for the whole season. Even killing the organisms with Chlorine Bleach this season will not keep them from coming back next year. Do your eyes and skin a favour, forget the Chems and blast that crap off.
