I am working on a project that is full of vaults groin vaults that is that I will have to frame. I dont know the math to figure the 45* radius or eliupes.

Is a "groin vault" an elliptical arch?
Is a groin vault an olympic event?
I look down my nose at people who dare to look down their nose at people.
Stu,
I see this is only your second post here in BT. I think you should have asked a different question first..lol...I can't waittttt to see the responses. A GROIN VAULT? ROFLOOO ,,My wife said one thing I DONT have is a groin vault. Damn thang aint EVER locked up! LOL. She says my groins always on guard at full attention and doesn't need a vault. O boy....what a great thread this is gonna be.
In all seriousness what's a groin vault? Kinda sounds like a chastity belt
Be well

I once vaulted over the rump of a horse and it was classified as a "groin vault" when I landed on the saddle horn.
George Carlin once said that you call it 'groin' because that's the sound you make when you get hit there.
well, I know what both kinds of groin vaults are, but don't have the math for the architectural ones either - I do know Joe Fusco, who still floats around here occasionally, is a good bet to have something - Brisketbean posted some pictures of vaults he was associated with a while back; I think he was the finisher, and perhaps not the framer - the trouble now becomes finding/making JF and BB aware -
Jerrald Hayes, you're on - - where in the forum are Joe and BrisketB hanging out? how does one contact them ?

thanks joe the geometrics of this has always bogged me down some what . specifically the elliptical "hips" (green) then the cuting of the "jacks" from the "blue to the green or rather green to red" now granted i've scribed getting the blue in place then placeing the green as a blank then scribing the trajectory(?) any pointers would be a help. i've wrestled threw 5 in my "career" with good results but is there a mathematical and /or diffrent approach that will steamline things. as always thank you.... cheers... bear

Nice drawing Joe. This could have been an interesting thread, but seems a bit sophomoric now. Have you framed a groin or ribbed arch? I have not seen them on any new construction around here. An occasional barrel arch is on larger commercial buildings.
I had the same question you did a few months ago. Brisketbean posted some pictures of his work and that sparked my curiosity. The math involved isn't as hard as it looks. Go to http://www.grandentries.com and email Brisketbean. He was very helpful when I asked him questions. He has some pictures of the framing and the finished products.
Post some pics when you get it all done. Let us know how it goes.
Joe,
Give everyone a refresher on how to figure the semi-minor and semi-major axis (pronounced axe-eye? since it's plural :-) )
