We just bought a house with an OLD gunite pool with severe cracks in the wall beneath the coping. There are areas with two to three inch high cracks that are inches deep. We suspect that the issue was caused by improper work done when the coping was replaced years ago. Frankly, it looks like somebody filled it up with sand and plastered over it. Can anybody offer advice on the proper way to bring the pool up to snuff? The quotes we are getting are not appealing. It will need sandblasting and paint but the cracks are the major issue.

Epoxy injection. Not cheap, but you can buy kits
The other thing is maintanence. Ifr you are in a frost zone, the swelling of the earth and put tremendous stresses on the walls.

The coping was not thinset properly to the pool bond beam. One option is to remove the coping and install new ones. The other is to remove the coping and install a cantilevered deck. Only a few contractors know how to install pool decks with proper expansion joints.
